invite you to join us for Connie Flynn's
Point Of View BOOTCAMP
WHEN: Saturday, October 4, 2008 — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
WHERE: Sheraton 4 Points hotel conference center, 1900 E. Speedway Blvd.
FEE: $60 — $50 if received by September 24; fee includes lunch and workshop materials
POINT OF VIEW — USE IT OR LOSE IT
More to the point, fail to use it, lose your readers. Most people think point of view is a technique
you pull from your writing toolbox when needed. This seems so reasonable you can easily overlook that
it's almost like saying you keep your eyes and ears in a drawer until you need them.
POINT OF VIEW IS YOUR STORY
Just as you need your eyes and ears to experience the real world, readers need fully engaged characters
to experience your story world. The deeper and more authentically you explore character perspective and judgment,
the deeper and more authentically the reader lives your story.
WHAT COUNTS IS HOW YOUR CHARACTERS SEE THE WORLD
What does your character think of as normal? As odd? As good or bad? Every time the hero approaches an event
in a story, it is experienced through these opinions. This is what forms point of view, and this is what we
will explore in this one-day workshop.
WE'LL BE BUSY!
This is a hands-on seminar with minimal lecture time. With several characters in mind, we will:
- 1. Define character goal and motivation.
- 2. Define what character values and devalues.
- 3. Define character focus, attitudes, and quirks.
- 4. Write brief action scenes that reveal the character.
- 5. Write the same actions through an antagonist POV.
- 6. Write the same actions through an observer's POV.
- 7. Read and review your written work with classmates.
- 8. Rewrite if needed.
This seminar is designed for beginners as well as experienced writers who want to loosen up old writing habits.
At the end of the day, you will be comfortable with deep involvement in your characters and will be able to
shift perspectives with ease. Bring several good pens. A highlighter might be helpful.
If you have a notebook where you organize your materials, bring that. Otherwise, paper and worksheets will be provided.
