These are the classes I will be offering for the summer and fall semesters of 2008. All of them are on-line courses, and most also have periodic campus meetings. CRW271 Draft a Novel in 30 Days is an inspiring exploration into how productive you can be as a writer. Graduates report a feeling of euphoria when they finish this course and the work is often surprisingly good. CRW274 Revising the Novel is only available to students who have completed Writing the Novel. If you don't have the prereq, consider enrolling in CRW272 Planning and Structuring the Novel, which is also offered this fall semester. This course starts with the foundations of stories -- characterization and story structure. At the end you will have a simple story outline and fully developed characters that will be revealed through your plot. CRW200 Readings for Writers is a basically self directed course that allows you to choose a reading list on a specific topic. Since my specialty is fiction, I will be most helpful if you want to explore a specific type of fiction. I can help with other types of reading lists but probably not with the depth that I bring to fiction. Readings requires a high level of self-discipline as feedback is minimal and you're expected to work independently. I am also teaching another section of Draft a Novel this fall. It is a very popular course.

MY SUMMER 08 CLASSS

CRW271 Section 5542. DRAFT A NOVEL IN 30 DAYS. 6/16 - 7/31. A bold course where students set an aggressive creative writing schedule to complete a rough draft of a novel in one month. This is a three-credit Web Hybrid class that begins Monday June 16th with a mandatory orientation meeting from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm in room B126. The rest of the course is completed on line by daily posting of a minimum page count, which concludes on July 31st. The orientation will cover the basics of characterization and story structure and provides a chance to know each other.

MY FALL 08 CLASSES

CRW200 Section 1163. READINGS FOR WRITERS. 9/2 - 12/2. This one-credit Web BB course allows the student an opportunity to read and report on fiction that explores your particular area of interest and on your time schedule. I'll also assist in research projects intended to be used to develop works of fiction. For all other topics, I recommend you speak with one of the other faculty members who offer this course. This is an entirely on-line class and is for the most part self-directed. There are guidelines on the website to help start you off and I give on-line feedback along the way. There are no campus meetings of this class.

CRW271 Section 5977 DRAFT A NOVEL IN 30 DAYS. 10/25-12/06. A bold course where students set an aggressive creative writing schedule to complete a rough draft of a novel in one month. This is a three-credit Web Hybrid BB class that begins Saturday, October 25 with a mandatory orientation meeting from 9am to 1pm in room B105. The rest of the course is completed on line by daily posting of a minimum page count, which concludes on November 30th. The final week is for wrap-up and planning future revisions. The orientation will cover the basics of characterization and story structure and provides a chance to know each other.

CRW272 Section 5983. PLANNING & STRUCTURING THE NOVEL. 08/26-12/19. A Web Hybrid BB three-credit class, this is Part I of a three semester series that concludes with revising your finished product. Enroll in the class if you are dedicated to finishing your novel and want guidance and support during the process. This class is primarily on line, but to provide time for workshopping and comradery, it has five on-campus meetings on Tuesday evenings, 5:30-9:30 pm. The orientation meeting is Tuesday, August 26th in OSW206 and we will establish our remaining four classroom dates at that meeting.

CRW274 Section 5989. REVISING THE NOVEL. 08/23-12/06. A three credit Web Hybrid BB class, this is Part III of the novel writing series that begins with Planning & Structuring the Novel. Students will learn to analyze and revise their work and to assist others in revising theirs. Each student will study and analyze a novel of their choice in their genrea. There will be considerable on-line review of each other's materials with emphasis on producing a finished, polished product of second draft quality or better. The orietation meeting is Saturday, August 23 in OSW206 from 9am to 1pm and we will establish our remaining four classroom dates at the meeting. This class is open only to students who have successfully completed CRW272 and CRW273.
